Rame Regatta 2018

Wed 1st Aug 2018

On a sunny Saturday in late July, Portishead Pilot Gig Club attended the annual Rame regatta. Racing began at midday as the Cornish coastal town baked in Mediterranean conditions. The first race for Portishead was the ladies B, with 22 clubs split across two heats. The ladies put in a great effort against experienced crews and although came in last, enjoyed every minute. Next out were the men’s B and the crew had taken the opportunity to do some valuable pre-race drills in the gig. A gallant effort from the crew who finished ahead of Sidmouth by 32 seconds. The first scalp for the men with training on and off the water starting to pay off. Ladies C squad were next to race and surpassed the men’s achievement. Huge effort and improving technique resulted in a 14th place finish ahead of Looe, Fowey and Brixham. Rowing next was the men’s c race and Portishead enjoyed a very positive row in more choppy conditions. Finishing last, but running local rivals Clifton very close, with just a 21 second gap. The final race of the day in fading evening sun, was the mixed crew, again Portishead put in a strong performance finishing ninth ahead of Sidmouth. This one was a special race for our newly trained Coxswain Jackie D – well done Jackie! Portishead showed that with enthusiasm, great spirit and hard training results will improve. The club will continue to race against some of the best and most experienced clubs in the country, learn lessons and hopefully start to make an impact on the gig league. A great party in the evening followed – Thank you to Rame Pilot Gig Club for a wonderful day and evening of celebrations and for the loan of Spirit of Rame.
