Portishead rower to row the atlantic

Wed 21st Oct 2020

Two rowers from both Portishead and Bristol Gig Clubs are about to embark on the challenge of a lifetime and take part in the the world's toughest rowing race. Both experienced Gig rowers, they are part of a 4 person team rowing from La Gomera to Antigua all the way across the Atlantic. With over 3000 miles to row in a lightweight, 10m long rowing boat they will have to navigate many challenges - such as 40ft waves, heavy storms, baking hot sun and busy shipping lanes. That doesn't even take in account the potential for dehydration, extreme fatigue, sleep deprivation, blisters, sores and sunburn. The race is part of the Talisker Atlantic Rowing Race and will see 20 teams take part, some rowing alone, others as pairs or in fours. They will plan to row two hours on and have two hours rest/sleep. In those two hours, as well as sleep they will have to eat. It is likely Will and his team members will each burn around 12000 calories a day. Will and Gemma will be part of the team "Force Genesis" and are looking to raise money for two charities, Duty to Care and Blood Bikes.. Duty to Care provides wellbeing support to improve and sustain the mental health and wellbeing of healthcare professionals. Blood Bikes provides an essential out-of-hours transportation service, transporting everything from blood, to milk to respirators. To donate to their cause please go to their website www.forcegenesis.co.uk The journey will take their team around 40 days and we will be able to track them and keep an eye on their progress. PPGC will also be keeping their social media up to date with their current status. So keep an eye out on facebook/ppgc We wish them all the best of luck!
