Burnham-on-Sea Regatta 2021

Sun 14th Nov 2021

Burnham-On-Sea Gig Club hosted their first ever regatta this weekend with Clevedon, Portishead, Bristol, Combwich, Porlock and Burnham all taking part. It felt so good to be launching the gigs off the beach and racing once again against our local rivals! The sun was shining on a beautiful remembrance day and the conditions were perfect for November rowing. Racing began at 1pm on an incoming strong tide. First up were the Mixed Vets who put in a great performance against strong Bristol and Clevedon crews, coming third. Next were the Ladies A crew who put in an absolutely stirling performance coming first by several boat lengths. Timing was perfect and it was great to lift a trophy at the end of the day. Mens A came 3rd behind Bristol and Clevedon, having to battle hard against the tide they rowed well and had a strong finish. On a much shorter course, our strong youth crew then took on Bristol. First time they faced a buoy turn in a race they performed so well. It was great to see them working so well as a crew and enjoying their racing. Ladies B raced next, coming 3rd, with Porlock winning a great race. PPGC fought hard to catch Clevedon in 2nd, but just missed out on the finishing straight. However it felt good to beat Bristol! The Mens B followed on in their race finishing 2nd, with Clevedon coming first. In fast disappearing light and an outgoing tide, the mixed supers put in an incredible performance for the last race, again coming third. Congratulations to all the teams taking part, it was so great to all be racing again. Huge thanks to Burnham for putting on a really successful regatta, we look forward to the next one!
