Return to racing!

Mon 16th Aug 2021

This weekend saw a welcome return to racing for both Portishead and Clevedon Gig Clubs. Having watched so many regattas being cancelled due to the COVID pandemic and realising both clubs were really short of race practice, a plan was hatched to try some local informal, "fun" races! So Black Nore was towed to Clevedon Sea front for the first time in two years, and took on the might of Ladye Bay! It was great to be back out and racing, to battle with the sea and an opponent! 4 races took place, with very mixed crews. Some of the crew had never raced before, and had very limited sea experience, but it was all useful practice. To feel the nerves, andrenaline, and the anticipation of that racing start was good for all. Having been rowing in bubbles until recently, it felt so positive to be finally doing something together as a club. Portishead managed to win the first race, but Clevedon took the next 3 races by a large margin. We even had our Junior crew racing for the first time ever. They coped brilliantly racing a much older and more experienced crew. We are so proud of them, and look forward to seeing them race in more regattas.
